Ice Blocks to Cool New York Apartments and Office Buildings

manhattan ice blocks

These 500 pound blocks of ice are used to chill the office buildings of New York city during peak summer - this method reduces overall electric usage and is also considered to be more environment friendly.

Under the system, the ice blocks are frozen at night in the basement of the buildings and then used to cool offices during the day. At night the water is frozen again and the cycle repeats. [see illustration below]

The Discovery Channel report says: An ice-cooling system in the Credit Suisse offices at the historic Metropolitan Life tower in Manhattan is as good for the environment as taking 223 cars off the streets or planting 1.9 million acres of trees to absorb the carbon dioxide caused by electrical usage for one year.
